When you think of some of the most exciting films that you’ve watched, there has almost always been a scene or two that features an exciting car chase, particularly in action movies. Cars usually take centre stage in these kind of films, and they are typically the biggest gas guzzlers around. As many countries are planning to restrict the number of petrol and diesel cars that go into production in the near future, we’re more likely to see a higher representation of electric cars in upcoming films, but for now we’ve taken a look back at some of the biggest gas guzzling cars on the silver screen:
Lamborghini Centenario – Transformers: The Last Knight
The Transformers franchise features a wide range of gas guzzlers such as the Bugatti Veyron Grand Sport Vitesse, the Lamborghini Aventador and the Chevrolet Camaro. The car that lets off the most CO2 emissions though is the Lamborghini Centenario, which appears in the fifth instalment of Transformers: The Last Knight. Astonishingly, the Centenario releases around 370g of CO2 per km, making it the largest consumer of fuel in the history of film. It has also appeared in the popular US series, Billions, which seems like the perfect addition when you consider the show’s premise is centred around the world of hedge funds.
Lexus LC500 – Black Panther
Coming in at number two is the Lexus LC500, which featured in the 2018 blockbuster Black Panther. The car releases a whopping 267g of CO2 per km, which is a 45% increase from its hybrid sister, the Lexus LC500 3.5H. One of the most exciting scenes of the movie came when King T’Challa was riding atop the Lexus, in what was a truly pulsating car chase. Originally, the Lexus LC500 was merely a concept car, but it was eventually rolled out to the public.
Subaru WRX STI – Baby Driver
Baby Driver is widely considered as one of the best driving films in recent times, so it’s no surprise that the main car is a top tier gas guzzler. The Subaru WRX STI releases 242g of CO2 per km, and was filmed doing a range of spectacular stunts throughout the film. After the movie’s release, the car was put on sale on eBay and was sold for $69,100. This was quite a remarkable fee when you consider that the car had already clocked more than 158,000 miles and suffered a significant amount of cosmetic damage during the filming!
BMW M5 Saloon – Mission Impossible: Fallout
In the latest installment of Mission Impossible, IMF agent Ethan Hunt (played by Tom Cruise) was soaring through the streets of Paris in a BMW M5 Saloon, which has a CO2 emission rate of 231g per km. The eye-wateringly fast BMW is a 600-horsepower four wheel drive and comes equipped with a V8 biturbo engine, making it the perfect vehicle for high-octane pursuits against international terrorists. This wasn’t the first time that BMW had taken the spotlight in a Mission Impossible movie, as the BMW i8 hybrid made its debut in Ghost Protocol, and the BMW M3 starred in one of the most spectacular driving stunts in film history in Rogue Nation.
