The visual effects in Percy Jackson’s Sea of Monsters are fantastic and fitting in this Greek-mythology retelling of Rick Riordan’s book for teen and tween-agers. Dan Kaufman, who did the visual effects for “District 9,” is responsible for the stunning variety of the Greek pantheon with the usual satyrs and centaurs, but beasts like the water horse “Hippocampus,” zombies and a mechanical bull add a different dimension to this story.
Set in modern day, the story opens at Camp Half Blood – where the children of the gods and human beings live together in a sort of summer camp meets boot camp environment. When the protective field that is placed around the camp is penetrated by a rampaging mechanical bull, Percy (son of Poseiden) and his friends (including the blue-eyed Alexandra Daddario, currently seen on the “Radioactive” music video with Imagine Dragons) must quest for the Golden Fleece in order to return the world back to balance.
Comparisons have been made to the Harry Potter franchise since the first movie “Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief,” became a global hit, but “Sea of Monsters” stands on it’s own merits. It manages to deal with teenage angst with a sense of humor and deliver a walloping good time. Director Thor Freudenthal can take his talented young actors *SPOILER ALERT* from the stomach of a monster in the Bermuda Triangle (complete with zombie cohorts) to a luxury yacht where a final battle is waged with Kronos (Percy’s evil grandfather) with skill: in the end satisfaction is felt as evil is once again thwarted.
